8. ELEMENTS AND SPACES OF SÚRIA'S MINING HERITAGE

Archaeological remains, old mines, neighborhoods of houses or routes that follow the old transport infrastructure are some of the elements of the mining heritage that are scattered throughout the municipality.

Currently, some of these heritage elements can be visited and tell us small fragments of the mining history of Bages and Súria.

EL SALÍ SHAFT

To the south of the municipal boundary of Súria, on the left bank of the Cardener River, we find El Salí shaft, the entrance to the old Roumanie mine where René Macary and Emili Viader discovered potash. The remains of this shaft were about to disappear completely, until in 2012, on the centenary of the discovery of potash, the company ICL recovered and preserved it.

This place has a great meaning and a strong symbolic power both for Súria and for the history of potash mining, even beyond Bages. Currently, this point can be visited from the outside and is signposted.

THE RAILWAY BRIDGES

During the construction of the railway from Manresa to Súria, it was necessary to solve a few orographic difficulties, while saving the terrain's unevenness. Five viaducts were built along the line, among which the Joncadella Bridge and Cal Nenus Bridge stand out.

The Joncadella viaduct crosses the stream of the same name in the boundary of Sant Joan de Vilatorrada and is the longest bridge on this line. It is built on a total of 11 pillars that form 13 arches, has a length of 169 meters, and a height of 25 meters. This engineering work is listed as a Cultural Property of Local Interest (BCIL).

To overcome the stream of Boadella, in 1923 Cal Nenus bridge viaduct was built, the highest on the route, with a height of 32.64 meters, and which is located between the municipal boundaries of Súria and Callús. The two buttresses on each side, it is formed by two semicircular arches, and in between, the central part of the structure is built with concrete.

THE ROPE WAY

The old route of the mining rope way that joined Súria and Cardona is today the Camí del Cable, a land route with a length of 11,78 kilometres which overcomes steep differences between the two towns.

The Camí del Cable can be travelled in either direction and has a linear route that can be completed in whole or in part. The route can be done on foot, by mountain bike or by 4x4, and it can be accessed from several points.

Along the way, you pass different elements of heritage interest, towers, pylons, tunnels or intermediate stations of the old potash transport line. One of the most interesting elements of this work of industrial engineering is the Manganell tunnel built in a 1941 reform.
